New 2.0 Litre Diesel Engine Unveiled
Mercedes-Benz has unveiled it's New Generation of Diesel Engine. Dubbed the OM654, it boasts much lighter weight (17% lighter), coming in at 168.4KG as compared to its predecessor which weighs in at 202.8KG. One of the ways then went about achieving this is by making the engine the first four-cylinder diesel engine made out of aluminium. Another way they have achieved this weight-saving is by designing a more compact engine.
This state-of-the art engine replaces the popular OM651 engine, Mercedes' most produced engine in it's history, which is in use in everything from the A-Class through to Mercedes commercial vehicles.
The 654 engine also boasts significantly reduced fuel consumption, up to 13%, partly due to the reduction in size and weight but largely due to a 25% reduction in in friction thanks to NANOSLIDE® coating on the cylinder lining.
The OM654 will first be launched in the spring in the new E220d but like the older 651 engine it will be available in a large range of models eventually. Mercedes-Benz also promises that the engine will be significantly quieter than it's predecessor.
